Beyond the Cross: Acts of the Holy Spirit
We take most of our Christian theology, vocabulary, and practice for granted because we have been familiar with it for as long as we have been in church. But imagine a time when none of that existed…when even the idea of a “Church” was brand new, there were no systematic theology textbooks, and the foremost theologians of the day were ex-fishermen, tax collectors, rebels, and one former Pharisee extremist. Welcome to the era of the New Testament book of Acts. It was in this season that the first generation of believers began to discover what it meant to live out the transformation that Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection had brought. But they were not doing this on their own—they were filled, empowered, and enlightened by the Holy Spirit of God, the primary actor in the book of Acts. We welcome you, as together we journey into our sermon series, “Beyond the Cross: Acts of the Holy Spirit.”
Encountering Jesus: Journey to the Cross
Our theme for the Lenten season this year is "Encountering Jesus: Journey to the Cross." Luke 9:1 reads, "As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem." As Jesus faces toward the cross and intentionally travels toward His crucifixion, He encounters a number of unique people from different walks of life: disciples, followers, questioners, the ill, and some enemies. During Lent and through Holy Week we will journey with Jesus toward the cross, learning from a number of these encounters He had along the way.
